This Month: Brrr…it’s Winter time! Winter means two things, PLANTING and PRUNING.
This season brings the most guaranteed rainfall for the year. Most plants are also dormant during Winter. Therefore this is our window of opportunity to get planting, with less stress on the plants and more chance of surviving the planting process, due to consistent rain fall.
Fruit tree pruning is also carried out during Winter, while trees are dormant. This is an important requirement, in order to keep trees healthy and under control.
Of course, section tidies and regular garden maintenance are required all year round. Tree work and hedgetrimming should also be carried out.
Winter Top Tip: Simply collecting leaf matter from the ground can make a huge difference to the overall tidiness of your property. This will also reduce the risk of slipping when outdoors.
Keep your eyes peeled for what we refer to as ‘Winter Cheer’… trees that flower in the Winter! Examples are Magnolia, Manuka, Hibiscus, Camellia, Michelia, and Rhododendron. Also plants such as Hellebores (Winter Roses), Polyanthus, Pansies, Ornamental Kale, Calendula and bulbs. These not only feed the bees, but also prove delightful amongst a dull, Winter garden.
